Our walk to the Loxley Valley concluded our work on local history and the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864.  Children were given time to reflect and think about the devastating flood which happened in our local area over 100 years ago.  They tried to imagine the water rushing down the valley and how this affected the people who lived and worked there.  We also pointed out local features such as the water wheel at Little Matlock and discussed how the water was vital to the industrial units along the valley at the time and compared this to the use of electricity now.  We also found out that Pro-Roll, the unit at the mill now, is a steel rolling mill and steel was also rolled there 100 years ago.  The water wheel only stopped operating in 1957.
