We had a very successful visit to the Sheffield Hindu Samaj and Mandir on Tuesday. Our facilitator, Dr Patel, explained a lot about Hinduism to the children focussing on Hindu gods and goddesses and the stories associated with them. The children loved looking at the statues, decorations and pictures which made their learning in school more meaningful. Dr Patel told the children the stories of Rama and Sita and the elephant god, Ganesh. He also talked about Hindu festivals and how Hindu’s lead their lives and made comparisons between Hinduism and Christianity, focussing on the similarities. The children asked some very thoughtful questions and Dr Patel was impressed by their enthusiasm.

Back in school we have used the story of Rama and Sita in discussions about good and evil. We have examined and done observational drawings of Hindu artefacts and we have illustrated the story of Ganesh. We would like to say thank you to parent helpers, particularly those who came forward at the last minute. We hope that they found the opportunity to visit a Hindu Mandir interesting and informative.
