AUTUMN 2009

Charlotte's grandma gave us a large pumpkin from her allotment.  We read the book, “One child, one seed” which is about growing pumpkins in South Africa. The pumpkin prompted Elizabeth to come to school the next day dressed as a witch.

We looked at different kinds of squash.  This one is bumpy.  Some were cold and smooth.  Another was spotty.

We had to dig out the wet, cold, sticky and slippery seeds.
“It’s squishy and squashy and witchy.” said Ben.
The seeds got smaller and smaller. Phoebe, Aneesa and Charlotte were determined to find 100 seeds.

“It’s all gooey!”  There were 67 seeds in a one half of the pumpkin and 103 in the other.  “You can plant them and make more pumpkins” said William. We were left with an empty pumpkin, ready to be made into soup.

We learnt how to use knives safely before cutting up the pumpkin to make it into soup.  It was delicious.

Johnny Appleseed’s Challenge

Do different types of apples have different stars inside?

How many pips do you usually find in an apple?

Maybe you would like to investigate seeds in other fruits.  How may differences can you spot between the seeds, how are they the same?

If you have a pumpkin over the half term you might like to see how many seeds it contains. We would love to know how you got on.
