  AUTUMN TERM 2008

When we first came to school in the Autumn we spent a lot of time learning about the different areas in the classroom and how to use them carefully.

SPRING TERM 2009

We have been working hard learning how to read and write.  We have written down the thoughts of the characters in the story.

We have made story maps based on the story of the Three Little Pigs.

Crispin helps us learn to read and write.  We like to read silly sentences.

We learn lots of the key words that unlock reading for us.

Moving to music in paint helps us to become writers.

SUMMER TERM 2009

Garden Den Building

The children waved to Nook Lane Year 6 pupils as they approached the garden.  They were very excited at the thought of seeing older brothers and sisters.  The children listened attentively to Mrs Parkin who explained the activity.

  • talk to Year 6 about your den style
  • choose where the den could be
  • collect materials

The children were put into groups by Mrs Simpson and Mrs Parks.  The Junior children listened carefully to the Foundation Stage children and held their hands while they looked for den locations.

One group said "this is a good place, we could build it round the tree".  A Foundation Stage child said "it's too muddy on the ground" so they moved on.

Another group chose to build their den where the wooden toadstools were because they could use them as seats.

One group used tarpaulin and materials for the den construction.  The corner looked cosy and they explained that the red material was for sitting on and the shelter was for their reading corner.

Later in the morning Foundation Stage made a return visit to look at the dens.  The Junior children were waiting, one group showed the Foundation Stage children the mint they had pegged everywhere and let them smell it!  The Junior children had made fairy lights out of flowers.  The Foundation Stage children were so excited and loved the story the Junior children read to them called "Who's in the Loo?"

Comments from the children in Foundation Stage included:

Iris       " I liked the way they pinned the shelterover a hedge"

Emma     "I liked it when we built them, I liked the flowers inside"

Mason    "I liked doing the stories"

Caitlin    "I liked it when they were kind"

Reiss      "I liked it when we were gone and they built one to surprise us"

A big thank you to Nook Lane for your letters to Foundation Stage.

In June we had a special time with Mr Szurko. He came to school with fish, lobsters, crabs and shellfish.   Polly asked how the gills on the fish open.  Mr Szurko opened up the gills on a fish to show us the gills.

Charles said, “Fish faces are actually like humans. They have little tongues like ours. Their teeth are spiky.  We looked at the eyes of the fish. Riley noticed they were different from our eyes. He said they are on the side. We learnt that fish don’t blink. They haven’t got eyelashes. They have black eyes. We learnt what a female crab looked like.

We were surprised by the lobster. We thought it was scary but we were brave enough to touch it.  We thought it was smooth and slippy. David was brave enough to hold the lobster. Later he said it wasn’t heavy.

We looked closely at the scales. We noticed that they were silver and gold. We thought the scales were like funny circles and that they felt bumpy and slimy.

Thank you Mr Szurko for giving up your time, we learnt so many new things about sea food.
