AUTUMN 2007

We have been learning to tell the story of the Little Red Hen.  We made bread just like the Little Red Hen.

Later we told the story to all the school and our families in a special assembly.

SPRING 2008

The Police came to visit Foundation Stage.  The day before the visit we recorded some of the knowledge the children already had about the police.  We asked the children before the visit what did they want to find out about the police.

Charlotte knew that these jackets light up in the dark when lights shine on them.

The children came up with ideas for a police station in the room.  In small groups the children were encouraged to look very closely at photographs of the police vehicles before making models in the design and making area.  They were keen to write in notebooks and on clipboards.

Outside the children have been counting the different types of vehicles that pass school.  The children have been recording details of the cars in the car park. All of this is to encourage recording numbers for a purpose. We shall be helping the children to learn how to correctly form numbers.

We asked the children what new things they now know about the police.

Alicia said, “I didn’t know they had vans.”

Charlotte B said, “I didn’t know they had a jail in a van.”

Eleanor said, “I didn’t know they had so many seats in the van.”

Lucy thought that the van was scary.

Isabelle said that she learned about pepper spray.

Hannah learnt how to use the phone in the car and the siren. She didn’t know that police had batons that you hit on the ground.

SUMMER 2008

We have been learning to tell the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff.  We have been acting out the story during drama and have been writing the story too.

The Three Billy Goats went               We were acting out being

trip trap over the bridge                           the nasty troll

Baby Billy Goat went over the bridge to eat the fresh green grass

Some children chose to make up their own stories and draw story maps to accompany their stories.

A small group of children have been interested in learning and finding out about dinosaurs.  They have been working together as a group to make up their own dinosaur story and poem.

We went to Beacon Wood in May.  We all had a great time.  Here are some of our favourite things about the trip.

Callum:         I liked it when I found my tree – I found it straight away.

Rosie:          I liked it when we had a list of things to find.  I didn’t like

walking up the hill though, I was so tired!

Gabbie:        I liked the feel the tree game.  It was like a rough spiky

                   Stick.

Alex:           I liked finding my tree.  I found it straight away and there

was a hole in it.  It was hard going back up the steep steps

                   and I was tired.

When we return to school we drew maps of our route to Beacon Wood.

We have been caring for some tadpoles in Foundation Stage.  The children have been looking closely and talking about their observations and the changes they have noticed.

Daniel noticed that two of the tadpoles had changed into frogs.  He said "I know that frogs have strong legs and they eat flies".  Look!   Daniel noticed that one tadpole was turning into a frog.  "Do you know, frogs have long tongues to catch flies".

James said "It's turned into a baby frog.  It can eat flies because it's got a long tongue".

The children enjoyed looking closely at three frogs and carefully drew their observations.
