Reading to children is just as important (if not more important) as children reading to an adult.  To coincide with National Book Week we thought it would be a fun and a rewarding idea to trial a ‘Book at Bedtime’ month.  During the month of October, we asked parents and carers to try and read to their child/children a book, or part of a book, at bedtime.  It may be a family favourite or one borrowed from the school or Stannington library.   A calendar record was kept for each child to hand in at the end of the month for a prize draw.

We celebrated the ‘Book at Bedtime’ month with a Pyjama party on the last day of term, Friday 24th October and both children and staff  came to school wearing pyjamas and brought their favourite teddy and book.  Our aim for this day was to celebrate the reading of books.  Lessons during the day focused on stories and story telling.   All the children drew and coloured in a square which was added to a large piece of paper to create a "quilt" for each class.

WOW!!!!  The ‘Book at Bedtime’ month and celebratory pyjama party was a fantastic success!  The children have been buzzing about books, authors and stories.  It has been a pleasure to witness such enthusiasm and visitors to school on the pyjama party day found the atmosphere inspiring.  I would like to say a great big thank you to all parents and grandparents who have read to their child/grandchild prior to, and during our focus month.  I hope you continue to enjoy many more books in the coming months… and years.

Our prize giving assembly took place on Monday 10th November and 30 book prizes were given out to the lucky children picked out of a raffle for all the calendars returned.

Research has shown that children who are regularly read to by an adult ‘do best at school’ (Pie Corbett 2008) so together we are working in partnership to ensure that your child has the best possible start to their school life and education.
